背景

When product lifecycle management (PLM) was defined in the late 1990s, CIMdata was already promoting the notion of the bill of information (BOI), a structure that linked the bill of material (BOM) to many other forms of information and intellectual property that documents the elaboration and definition of a product, its manufacturing definition, and its eventual use and retirement. A myriad of applications can generate information, as we see today in the heterogeneous nature of tools used to support the product lifecycle and associated processes.
Today, the phrase is “the digital thread” and it has been adopted broadly by industry, governments, and the PLM Economy—CIMdata’s phrase to describe the software and services companies whose business is to help industrial companies achieve their PLM vision. Unfortunately, many of these actors mean quite different things by the same set of words, an all-too-common occurrence.
In this Forum, CIMdata will highlight the overall issue, and then focus on how the global PLM Economy is responding and how well their industrial clients are achieving their digital thread objectives.
Background
Since the onset of Industry 3.0 and the early applications of digital technology to the product lifecycle, firms have had to deal with the myriad information types generated as during those lifecycle activities. Scratchings on a cocktail napkin , formal requirements, program and project plans, early 0-1D models, mechanical computer-aided design (MCAD), electronic design automation (EDA) output, software source code and executables, and test results from simulation and analysis (S&A) are just some of the many information types that help describe the evolution of products from idea through life. In the late 1990s, CIMdata began talking about the bill of information (BOI) to describe this concept that predated the definition of PLM that emerged at that time.
Fast forward to today. The capabilities of information systems and storage devices to manage heterogeneous information continues to astound us. The concept today is “the digital thread,” and is used by software companies across PLM (and into other application domains, like ERP and CRM), as well as leading service providers. Government organizations, especially in aerospace & defense, are bullish on the topic. The phrase “single source of truth” has been brought to bear once again, and ideas of master data management (MDM) and data governance (DG) are essential to having a healthy and accurate digital thread, no matter your environment. But, as with most buzzwords or catch phrases, they mean very different things to different people and organizations.
Since our founding in 1983, CIMdata has been involved in helping to moderate such discussions for the betterment of the industry, and we have been actively working on this topic for several years. CIMdata administers the Aerospace & Defense PLM Action Group (AD PAG), an advocacy group for the requirements of the global A&D industry with the software and services companies upon which they rely to achieve their PLM objectives. In 2021, CIMdata published a research paper on the topic and initiated research jointly funded by the AD PAG and leading software and services providers to better understand the state of the art and practice around the digital thread in industry, and to document best practices and industry needs to help impact the roadmaps and plans of those software and services firms for the mutual benefit of the global A&D industry, and PLM users more generally.
The theme of this year’s PLM Market & Industry Forum, “The Digital Thread…,” was chosen to leverage the significant efforts of the AD PAG and the PLM Economy on this topic. The first thematic presentation will provide background on the work to date, clearly define the digital thread and related topics, and provide the framework for the sessions that follow. One focuses on the industrial perspective on the digital thread, and will leverage interviews with leading industrial firms on the topic, as well as a Web-based survey conducted by CIMdata to get a broader perspective from industry outside of A&D.
