Today, CIMdata, Inc., the leading global PLM strategic management consulting and research firm, published a new eBook focused on Siemens Digital Industries Software’s (Siemens) Enterprise Bill of Material (BOM) solution. Siemens’ comprehensive enterprise BOM solution is designed to enable manufacturers to engineer, produce, and service configured products while effectively managing change and feeding their downstream business solutions (e.g., ERP, service, supply chain). This eBook describes manufacturers need to better manage the many BOMs used throughout their extended enterprise, the benefits of an enterprise BOM approach. It will also describe Siemens’ solution to this problem and the results of a new CIMdata survey targeting industrial organizations to understand how end users learn about and adopt new technology and their status and plans for lifecycle product structure management.
Manufacturers have many different groups that create and use Bill of Materials, and each has its own unique view of what that BOM is, what it contains, and how it should be structured and viewed. Different views include engineering, manufacturing, procurement, service, sales and marketing, business planning, and even the customer. Because of the complexity of comprehensive BOM management, companies in all industries are looking for new, more effective and efficient methods and solutions to defining and managing the BOMs required throughout their extended enterprise and product lifecycles. An integrated enterprise BOM approach provides a modern approach to this issue, but until recently, implementing effective, integrated BOMs has been difficult to achieve.
Siemens has invested in developing and delivering significant Enterprise BOM capability that can be extended across all lifecycle functions. The new Teamcenter Enterprise BOM suite of solutions leverage Teamcenter BOM foundation extensions to best support effectivity-driven data management needs required by engineering, manufacturing, service, and other domains. Multiple, tailored BOM UIs are available for all stages of the product lifecycle, leveraging one common source of part and product data, eliminating the need to duplicate and reconcile data across disciplines.
Respondents to our survey manage complex products, with 10% having products with over 100,000 parts, and another 21% having products with from 30,000 to 100,000 parts. 20% of respondents have products with over 300 variants, and 34% report products with 51 to 300 variants. For all manufacturers, BOM complexity is clearly increasing, and many are looking for new approaches and solutions to address this problem.
According to Mr. Ken Amann, CIMdata Executive Consultant, “CIMdata believes that an enterprise BOM approach can provide significant benefits to manufacturing enterprises. Siemen Teamcenter Enterprise BOM suite provides a significant step forward to help companies manage their multiple BOM needs in an integrated, consistent manner, maintaining a unified definition comprised of electrical, electronic, software, and mechanical properties, as well as associated manufacturing and maintenance processes.”
